30th November 2012

Countdown to 2013 Formula One season: 104 days

Felipe Massa’s son celebrates his third birthday.
One of Finland’s many great F1 drivers, Mika Salo, is 46 today. Salo never won an F1 race and had 2 podiums in his 109 starts. Both came during his half year at Ferrari in 1999. Salo got his F1 start with Team Lotus in their final races in 1994. He then moved to Tyrrell for three years before driving at Arrows, BAR, Ferrari, Sauber and Toyota. Despite his lack of success, he remains popular. He won the LMGT2 class at Le Mans in 2008 and 2009.

On This Day:
Nothing much.

“Flag-gate” is over, and the FIA have said that Vettel’s pass was completely legal. It’s hard to see from the video, but there was a green flag being waved before Vettel overtook Jean-Eric Vergne. However, the discrepancy between the track status and the in-car lights will need to be sorted out.

The last day for any possible changing of the championship result, thank goodness.

Stat of the Day:
Over the course of 2012, the two Marussia drivers both gained on average three places per race. Third-best, with an average of 2.4 places per race, is Daniel Ricciardo. The Toro Rosso driver usually qualified better than his teammate in a mediocre car, and so this is a very impressive result. His teammate Jean-Eric Vergne also gained on average 2.3 places per race.
