Countdown to 2013 Formula One season: 90 days!
Happy birthday to fantastic GP3 driver Conor Daly of the USA!
On This Day:
F1 race winner Clay Regazzoni died on this day in 2006. The Swiss driver won five GPs, and finished third in his debut season – 1970 – despite only doing half the season for Ferrari. He finished seconf in 1974. He drove for Ferrari for the majority of his career, but also spent some time with BRM, Williams and Ensign. His career ended prematurely after an accident in the 1980 USGP West when his brakes failed and he crashed into a retired car. Regazzoni died when his car crashed into the back of a lorry on the Italian A1 motorway.
Team India (Karun Chandhok and Narain Karthikeyan) have made it through to the Nations Cup in the Race of Champions, which takes place at 1pm GMT today.
Conor Daly is considering racing in the US as he says that European racing is too expensive.
Stephane Richelmi has been signed alongside Marcus Ericsson at DAMS for the 2013 GP2 season.
Stat of the Day:
Heikki Kovalainen was the first [and currently only] F1 driver to win the Race of Champions, although at the time he was competing in the World Series by Nissan. He beat Sebastian Loeb in the 2004 final, having seen off Michael Schumacher in the race drivers final. (Sebastian Loeb won the rally drivers final)
However, in the Nations Cup it’s another story. Team Germany’s superstar duo of Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel have been teamed up since 2007, and won the cup every year since then. (In 2006, the Finnish duo of Kovalainen and rally driver Marcus Gronholm won the Cup, but Germany were fielding a lesser team)
