Countdown to 2013 Formula One season: 66 days

On This Day:
James Hunt took pole position for the opening race of the 1977 F1 season in Argentina. This would be the début race for the Renault and Wolf racing teams.

Carlos Sainz was restored to the lead of the Dakar Rally after the event’s satelite systems failed to work correctly, leaving Sainz and his co-driver struggling to find a checkpoint for a long period of time. He went into stage three with a five minute lead on Stephane Peterhansel.
Yesterday’s rallying, however, cost Sainz his lead to the Frenchman once again. The stage was won by Nassar Al-Attiyah, a competitive Qatari driver now second in the standings, but Peterhansel leads the cars at Dakar as they head into day four. Sainz is down to fifth, 20 minutes back. Trucks are still led by Dutchman Gerard de Rooy, quads are still led by Marcos Patronelli, while the bikes lead has changed hands for the third day in succession. Cyril Despres of France, who has won Dakar four times, is now in the lead.
Back in single-seaters, Carlin have moved Jazeman Jaafar from British Formula Three to Formula Renault 3.5 after the Malaysian finished second in the British series last year. His partner is still unknown.

Dakar day four.
