On This Day:
The debut race for the Wolf racing team saw them take a fantastic victory with Jody Scheckter at the 1977 Argentinian Grand Prix. Admittedly it was a race of high attrition, and only five drivers were racing at the end. However, a Ferrari and a Brabham were running at the end so it was a great showing for the privateer team.
Nasser Al-Attiyah won yesterday’s Dakar stage, narrowing the gap to Stephane Peterhansel. Olivier Pain now leads the bikes. Marcos Patronelli still leads the quads. Gerard de Rooy suffered with mechanical issues and handed the truck lead to Ales Loprais.
Johnny Ceccotto Jr has moved to Arden for the 2013 GP2 season.
Today: The Toyota Racing Series begins in New Zealand, at Invercargill.
Stat of the Day:
Wolf aren’t the only team to win their first race in F1, although it is unusual. Alfa Romeo won the first F1 world championship race, the 1950 British GP. More impressive was Mercedes, who made their debut at the 1954 French Grand Prix to win with Juan Manuel Fangio. Fangio would go on to win the world championship. More recently, the Brawn F1 team won their first race and took both championships, so perhaps it is not surprising that they were taken over by Mercedes.
