1st March 2013

Countdown to 2013 Formula One season: 14 days

IndyCar’s Will Power, who has just missed out on the title for the past three seasons, is 32 today.
Young British driver Jack Clarke is 25 today.

On This Day:
February is a quiet month in the history of F1, but not so for March. Four championship races have taken place on this day in history, all in South Africa.
The 1969 South African Grand Prix saw Jack Brabham take pole in his own car, but Jackie Stewart won in his Matra.
In 1975, Lella Lombardi became the second woman to qualify for and start an F1 race, driving for March. She retired. Polesitter Carlos Pace came fourth, while local hero Jody Scheckter won, the first South African to win his home race.
1980, and Jean-Pierre Jabouille took pole as the altitude favoured the Renaults. Rene Arnoux, his teammate, won and took the fastest lap.
And in 1992, Nigel Mansell had both pole and win at the first race at Kyalami since the controversial 1985 South African GP. And the first of March also became the first race for March, who qualified one car with Karl Wendlinger.

Adrian Sutil has been confirmed by Force India.
As Luiz Razia struggles to fund his F1 seat, rumours abound that Heikki Kovalainen could be having a seat fit for Marussia.
Josh Hill, Pipo Derani, Felix Serralles and Dmitry Suranovich have been confirmed by Fortec for the 2013 European F3 season.
Mark Webber was fastest on the first day back at Barcelona, though the weather was damp.
Williams have abandoned a controversial exhaust design that the FIA have ruled illegal.
James Calado has topped the final day of testing in GP2. Tom Dillmann, not running yesterday, was fastest over all three days and beat the record for the GP2/11 car.
Robert Kubica will be contesting the 2013 European Rally Championship with Citroen, making his first full season comeback since the 2010 Formula One season.
Lewis Hamilton’s brother Nic Hamilton will be cometing in the ETCC with Special Tuning Racing with a view to competing in the WTCC. Hamilton suffers from cerebral palsy and has been competing in the Renault Clio Cup.

F1 testing continues at Barcelona.
