4th March 2013

Countdown to 2013 Formula One season: 11 days

Jim Clark was born on this day in 1936.
Jos Verstappen is 35 today.

On This Day:
In a reverse of the 1973 South African GP, the previous year it had been Stewart on pole for Tyrrell, but Denny Hulme won for McLaren.
The 1978 South African GP had Niki Lauda on pole for Brabham, and Ronnie Peterson won for Lotus.
In Australia, in 2001, it was pole and win for Michael Schumacher. Future champion Fernando Alonso took his debut, as the team and tyres he won the championship with made their return – Renault and Michelin. It was also the debut for 2007 Kimi Raikkonen, and Juan Pablo Montoya. A tyre came off Jaques Villeneuve’s car and struck a marshall, Graham Beveridge, and killed him.

Testing is over. F1 is coming. Rosberg was fastest on the final day. Mercedes have done more testing kilometres than any other team this year. Sauber and Ferarri also put in a lot. Rosberg did the most distance, followed by Gutierrez and Hamilton.
