9th March 2013

Countdown to 2013 F1 season: 6 days

Former F1 driver Teo Fabi, who had three poles and no wins in his career, is 58 today.
Young driver Fabio Onidi is 25 today.

On This Day:
Both races on 9th March were won by the same driver, on the same track, driving for the same team. Both pole positions for the races were taken by the eventual champion. In 1997, Jaques Villeneuve began his second season with pole position, but McLaren driver David Coulthard was the winner. The Stewart, Lola and Prost teams all made their debut, as did Bridgestone tyres (who won their first race one day short of a year later).
In 2003, it was Michael Schumacher who took pole. But again David Coulthard won as Schumacher barely lost out on a podium to Kimi Raikkonen, both McLarens recovering from a poor qualifying. It was the end of a long run of Ferrari podiums. This would be Coulthard’s final victory in F1. Fernando Alonso had his first race for Renault.

Frank Williams’ wife Ginny sadly died yesterday after struggling with cancer.
Raffaele Marciello was fastest in the FIA European F3 testing today.
Stoffel Vandoorne was fastest in Formula Renault 3.5 testing.
Rally Mexico has begun, and Sebastian Ogier leads for VW at the time of writing this. Jari-Matti Latvala had a dramatic exit in his VW.

Rally Mexico continues.
More FR 3.5 testing at Paul Ricard.
