Countdown to 2013 Formula One season: Less than 24 hours!
On This Day:
Italian F1 driver Eugenio Castellotti sadly died aged 26 during a private Ferrari test at Modena. He took one pole position in his short career.
The 1993 South African GP was the first race of the season, and that year’s champion began dominantly with pole, win and fastest lap. Sauber had their debut, and took points by finishing fifth with JJ Lehto. Only five drivers were still racing at the end, but Sauber did have speed as Lehto qualified sixth. It was also the first race for Rubens Barrichello, Luca Badoer and Michael Andretti. Mark Blundell had his first podium, which was Ligier’s first since 1986.
In 2010, three teams made their debut – Lotus Racing (Caterham), Virgin Racing (Marussia), and HRT. Mercedes returned to F1 as a works team. Many drivers made their debuts including Nico Hulkenberg and Vitaly Petrov. Fernando Alonso won in his first race for Ferrari, while Felipe Massa – returning after his accident in 2009 – finished second.
Kevin Giovesi has joined Venezuela GP Lazarus for the 2013 GP2 season.
Patric Niederhauser was fastest on a wet second day of GP3 testing at Barcelona.
Formula One practice is tomorrow at an early hour of the morning for Europe. Tomorrow’s blog post will be at the usual time.
